Stunted or Slow Growth
A plant that has stalled well outside its expected dormant season is usually being limited by one specific resource rather than several things going wrong at once.
Common causes
Root-bound pot
Roots that have filled and circled the container have no room left to support new growth. Check for roots emerging from drainage holes and repot into a slightly larger pot.
Depleted soil nutrients
Potting mix loses its nutrient content over time, particularly if the plant hasn’t been repotted or fed in over a year. Resume regular feeding during the growing season.
Insufficient light
Too little light limits how much energy a plant has for new growth, regardless of how well it’s watered or fed. Increase light gradually rather than fertilising more heavily.
Normal seasonal dormancy
Many houseplants simply slow down in autumn and winter as day length drops. If the plant otherwise looks healthy, this may not need fixing at all.
