Transplant Shock

Wilting, leaf drop, or stalled growth in the days or weeks after repotting is a normal, usually temporary reaction as roots recover from disturbance.

Common causes

Root disturbance during repotting

Even careful handling breaks some fine root hairs, temporarily reducing the plant’s ability to take up water. Keep the plant out of direct sun and maintain steady, moderate moisture while it recovers.

Oversized new pot

A pot with far more soil volume than the roots can use holds excess moisture around still-recovering roots, raising the risk of rot on top of the existing stress. Size up only modestly rather than dramatically.

Change in light or location

Repotting often coincides with moving a plant to a new spot, compounding the stress of root disturbance with a change in light. Keep the plant in familiar conditions during recovery where possible.
