Potting soil isn't a permanent nutrient source — most bagged potting mixes have enough built-in fertilizer to support a plant for roughly six to eight weeks after potting, after which the plant depends entirely on whatever you feed it (or on repotting into fresh mix). Fertilizing is genuinely useful, but it's also one of the easier things to overdo.
Every fertilizer label shows three numbers, the N-P-K ratio: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Nitrogen supports leafy green growth, phosphorus supports root development and flowering, and potassium supports overall plant health and stress resistance. A balanced, general-purpose houseplant fertilizer (something like 10-10-10 or similar) suits most foliage plants; a fertilizer higher in phosphorus (the middle number) is more useful for flowering species during their bud-setting period.
Fertilize during the plant's active growing season — spring through summer for most common houseplants — when it's actually putting out new growth capable of using the added nutrients. Feeding during a plant's natural winter dormancy, when growth has slowed or stopped, does little good and can actually cause fertilizer salts to build up in the soil since the plant isn't taking them up.
Most liquid houseplant fertilizers are applied every four to six weeks during the growing season, diluted to the strength recommended on the label — or, for a gentler approach many growers prefer, diluted to half strength and applied every other watering. Slow-release granular fertilizers, mixed into the soil, typically last two to three months per application.
If you suspect over-fertilizing, flush the soil thoroughly with plain water — running several times the pot's volume through the drainage hole — to wash out excess salts, and hold off on feeding for a few weeks afterward.
Slower-than-expected growth, smaller new leaves, and pale, uniformly yellow-green foliage (especially with visible veins, a classic sign of nutrient deficiency) during the active growing season, despite adequate light and water, often point to a plant that's simply run out of nutrients in its soil.
Succulents, cacti, and slow growers like ZZ plant, snake plant, and sago palm generally need considerably less frequent feeding than fast-growing tropical foliage plants — often just a few light feedings across the entire growing season rather than a strict monthly schedule. Overfeeding these species is a more realistic risk than underfeeding them.
When genuinely unsure, feed less rather than more, and less often rather than more often. A slightly underfed plant recovers quickly once fed properly; an overfed one can take weeks to recover from root and leaf damage, and in severe cases the damage isn't fully reversible.
