The plant sold today as "snake plant" carries a tangled taxonomic history nearly as interesting as its toughness. For most of the twentieth century it was classified as Sansevieria trifasciata, but in 2017, following molecular phylogenetic research showing that the genus Sansevieria was nested deep within Dracaena, botanists folded the entire genus into Dracaena. The plant became Dracaena trifasciata almost overnight in scientific literature, even though the older name is still what most nurseries, plant tags, and casual growers use. Nothing about the plant itself changed — only its official classification — and both names are understood interchangeably across horticulture today.
Native to tropical West Africa, stretching across Nigeria and into the Congo basin, snake plant evolved in a demanding environment: dry, often nutrient-poor soils with intense, unfiltered sun. This origin explains almost everything about how the plant behaves indoors. Its thick, upright, sword-like leaves are heavily modified to store water, and like many plants adapted to hot, dry climates, it uses a specialized form of photosynthesis called CAM (Crassulacean Acid Metabolism). Unlike most houseplants, which open their stomata (leaf pores) during the day to take in carbon dioxide, snake plants open theirs at night, when evaporation is lowest, and store the carbon dioxide until daylight for photosynthesis. This adaptation dramatically reduces water loss and is a major reason the plant can go weeks, sometimes over a month, without watering and still thrive — a trait that has also made it the source of a persistent (if somewhat oversimplified) claim that it releases oxygen at night, unlike most plants.
